Recently, the 2022 Second IMS Prospective Technology Exhibition and Exchange Conference sponsored by Smart Vehicle Experts came to a successful conclusion in Suzhou. Shenzhen Oradar Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Oradar") participated in the exhibition with its latest intelligent cockpit 3D TOF solution. Dr. Chen Zhi, deputy general manager of Oradar, delivered a speech at the main venue, sharing the trend of 3D TOF intelligent cockpit application and the product planning of Oradar. Dr. Chen Zhi believes that 3D TOF is an ideal 3D vision technology for the current mass production of intelligent cockpits. Oradar will work with its partners to develop 3D TOF full-stack solutions for mass production by car manufacturers.

3D TOF Technology Is Becoming Sophisticated, Suitable for Intelligent Cockpit Applications


More than 200 industry experts from well-known automobile enterprises, Tier 1, DMS algorithm manufacturers, optical module manufacturers, suppliers of core components such as light sources, packaging and testing, and scientific research institutes gathered at this IMS exchange meeting, discussing the industry trend and innovative applications of automotive cockpit monitoring and cockpit perception systems.

In a speech titled Application of 3D Vision Technology in the Intelligent Cockpit System, Dr. Chen Zhi analyzed the implementation process of 3D vision perception industry in detail. Dr. Chen Zhi said that 3D visual perception technology has achieved mature implementation in consumer-level applications and industrial-level applications, and developed applications such as depth cameras, smart door locks, mobile phone cameras, small ranging modules, industrial ranging, AGV, service robots, robotic arm obstacle avoidance and distance measurement. As technologies mature, 3D vision applications will also enter the field of intelligent vehicles, especially in intelligent cockpits.image.png

At present, the mainstream 3D visual perception technologies in the market are mainly divided into three technical routes: structured light, TOF and binocular. Dr. Chen Zhi believes that 3D TOF is currently the most suitable 3D vision technology for mass production and applications of intelligent cockpits at this stage. Compared with the other two technologies, TOF technology has obvious advantages, including:


  • Direct access to depth information, friendly to applications and algorithms, better human-vehicle interaction effect;
  • Based on active light source emission, excellent module anti-interference, output of high-precision depth data and accurate detection data;
  • Simple TOF module structure, and high reliability on the vehicle.


Taking the 3D TOF intelligent cockpit application demonstrated by Oradar as an example, 3D TOF can realize real-time driver monitoring, 3D face recognition, cockpit monitoring gesture interaction, 3D gesture recognition and other functions.

Dr. Chen Zhi said that intelligent cockpit applications based on TOF technology have been launched one after another, including iTOF gesture recognition vehicle and infotainment system control, iTOF skeleton recognition driving behavior analysis, iTOF 3D gesture large screen control, single-point TOF vehicle tailgate control. However, at present, car manufacturers are still unfamiliar with key issues such as how to specifically apply TOF technology in intelligent cockpits, which technology stacks need to be opened, and which suppliers need to cooperate. There is still a lot of mature space for cockpit applications based on 3D vision technology.

As the country continues to introduce relevant laws, regulations and policies to encourage and support intelligent vehicles, the upstream and downstream industry chains of intelligent vehicles will continue to improve and promote the application of emerging technologies. According to the forecast of the Prospective Industry Research Institute, as the number of cameras required for bicycles continues to increase, it is expected that the global vehicle camera market will reach 27 billion US dollars by 2025, and the Chinese vehicle camera market is expected to exceed 23 billion yuan. 


Dr. Chen Zhi said that as the vehicle TOF industry develops further, the car manufacturers' demand for intelligent cockpit applications based on 3D iTOF technology will continue to increase. Oradar will work with its partners to create a 3D TOF full-stack solution that can be mass-produced by car manufacturers, so as to improve the level of vehicle digitalization, enrich the application ecology of vehicle space, and make digital cars smarter and safer.
